Introduction
Group Types in BuddyBoss help you organize groups into categories This feature enhances navigation and user experience by allowing members to filter and explore groups by category.
Step-by-Step Procedure
Step 1: Enable Group Types
Before categorizing groups, you must enable the Group Types feature.
- Navigate to BuddyBoss > Settings > Groups from your Dashboard.
- Scroll down to find the Group Types section.
- Tick the box to Enable Group Types.
- Click Save Settings to confirm the change.
Step 2: Create New Group Types
After enabling Group Types, you can create custom categories tailored to your community’s structure.
- In the Group Types section, click on the hyperlinked Group Types text.
- Click on the Add New button.
- Fill in the following fields:
- Name (Singular) – For example, School.
- Name (Plural) – For example, Schools.
- Slug – URL-friendly version of the group type (e.g., school).
- Click Publish to create the new group type.
Step 3: Assign Group Types to Specific Groups
You can assign new or existing groups to a specific group type for better categorization.
- Navigate to BuddyBoss > Groups from your Dashboard.
- Click on All Groups and select the group you want to categorize.
- Click on the Edit button for the selected group.
- Scroll down to the right-hand side to find the Group Type section.
- Select the desired Group Type from the list (e.g., School).
- Click Update to apply the change.
You can also assign a Group Type to a Group by:
- Navigating to the Group Page > Manage.
- Click Settings
- Set you desired Group Type.
Test the Setting:
- Navigate to the Group Page on the frontend.
- Confirm that the group is now labeled under the selected Group Type (e.g., School).
Step 4: Change Group Member Labels
BuddyBoss allows you to customize member labels for each group type, making the roles more relevant to the group’s context.
- Navigate back to the Group Types page and select the group type you want to customize (e.g., School).
- Scroll down to the Member Labels section.
- Change the following labels:
- Organizers to Teachers
- Moderators to Mentors
- Members to Students
- Click Update to save the changes.
Step 5: Adding Group Type in the Group Type Filter
You can allow members to filter groups by type in the Group Directory.
- Go to BuddyBoss > Settings > Groups > Permissions Section.
- Tick the box to Display this group type in the Types filter in the Groups Directory.
- Click Save Settings.
Test the Setting:
- Navigate to the Group Directory on the frontend.
- Select Schools from the Types Filter to see only groups categorized under this type.
Step 6: Enable Auto Membership Approval
You can enable Auto Membership Approval for specific group types to streamline the joining process.
- Navigate back to the Group Types page and select the group type (e.g., School).
- Enable Auto Membership Approval by ticking the checkbox.
- Click Save Settings to confirm.
- Click on the hyperlinked Profile Types text.
- Edit the relevant Profile Type (e.g., Teachers).
- Scroll down to Group Type Membership Approval and select Schools.
- Click Update to save the settings.
Step 7: Create Dedicated Pages for Group Types
BuddyBoss allows you to create dedicated pages for each group type using shortcodes.
- Go to the Group Types page and select the group type (e.g., School).
- Scroll down to find the Shortcode section.
- Click Copy to Clipboard to copy the shortcode.
- Navigate to Pages > Add New from the Dashboard.
- Create a New Page and add a Shortcode Block.
- Paste the copied shortcode into the block.
- Publish the Page.
Test the Setting:
- Click on View Page to see the dedicated page displaying all groups under the School type.
